The research project "Tactile Display for virtual reality applications" includes the conception of a novel tactile display for the simulation of sensory impressions that appeal to haptic perception of stimuli. For this purpose, a display is developed on the hardware side which can induce both normal forces and shear forces per exciter pin. The IMPT is responsible for the conception and design of the standard force actuator with the following requirements:

  • Conception and design of electromagnetic plunger armature
  • Determine and design mechanical guides, springs and natural frequencies
  • Calculate and consider thermal influences during operation
  • Realise the interface between normal force and shear force actuator
  • Contacting and assembly and connection technology of the components

In addition, studies on the perception threshold are carried out with the partner institutes on the basis of test persons. The hardware requirements profile results from the results of these tests using complex simulations. On this basis, the normal force and shear force actuator are realized.

The project is carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Dynamics and Vibrations (IDS) and the Institute for Human-Machine Communication at the University of Hanover.
