Microtribology

Microtribology deals with the mechanical behavior of homogeneous materials in the sub-µm range. The E-modulus, hardness, and coefficient of friction as well as other factors of sliding surfaces are measured.

With the Triboindenter from the company, Hysitron, layer properties of metals, oxides, and synthetic materials (photoresist), are determined and analyzed at the IMPT.

Another area of micro and nanotribology is the analysis of solid materials which cannot or only with great efforts be characterized by the macro and micro hardness measurement method. Here, mainly ceramic and crystalline materials such as silicon, aluminum oxide and silicon carbide are mentioned.

Furthermore, wear tests are carried out on a rotary wear test stand according to the Pin-on-Disk method for two-dimensional micro contact. With this experimental equipment, existing and new concepts for hard disk systems, on a magnetic base, can be analyzed for wear.
