STUDIUM INITIALE - Transition Management and Integration of Professionally Qualified in Higher Education

The shortage of skilled workers and demographic change pose new challenges to the training system. It is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to find and retain well-trained specialists.
In this context, the IMPT is active to make a contribution. In the completed project "Offene Hochschule Niedersachsen" (Open University of Lower Saxony), the foundations were laid to make it easier for people who do not have a general university entrance qualification (Abitur) to enter higher education. The crediting of professionally acquired competences to the course of study plays an important role here.
The current project STUDIUM INITIALE of the joint project Mobility Economy focuses on the areas of training and further education for employees and specialists of companies at universities. The current project is thus continuing the efforts of its predecessor project OHN as part of the BMBF-funded competition "Advancement through Education: Open Universities". Together with the Central Institute for Continuing Education (ZEW), concepts for preparation and orientation courses are developed and implemented. These courses are designed to facilitate the transition from work to university and improve students' chances of success. The traditional university education is thus opened up to a wider circle of people and the permeability of the education system is increased.
A new focus at the IMPT is to develop concepts for subject-specific part-time module courses. The topics offered in this context have emerged as a result of a needs survey of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Hanover region, which was carried out in 2012/2013. The aim of these courses is to improve the integration of scientific know-how into practice. In this case, the efforts do not lie in the completion of an entire university course, but rather in the concrete transfer of subject-specific, even small-scale knowledge, in tailored module courses. These offers make it possible for companies to increase the attractiveness as an employer and thus of the location through extended further training opportunities. The courses developed are to be continued as an offer for professionals to support lifelong learning.
