Quantum technology as the key to the future: Micro and Nano Integrated Manufacturing Lower Saxony (MINIMALS)

At the Institute for Microproduction Technology, the MINIMALS - Micro and Nano Integrated Manufacturing Lower Saxony project has been awarded a new line of funding to expand the infrastructure. This will decidedly push the development of quantum technology at the institute, which is a central engine of technological progress in the 21st century. It opens doors to solutions for challenges that seem insurmountable with current technology and plays a crucial role in fulfilling the sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

As part of the infrastructure measure co-financed by the European Union, investments are planned in cutting-edge technology facilities to establish the necessary production processes for quantum systems. For example, the integration of an 8-inch compatible lithography line, a confocal sputter system and an ultra-short pulse laser system for component processing. These advanced technologies will be integrated into the existing IMPT cleanroom and support the production of atomic vapor cells, a crucial component of modern quantum systems.

MINIMALS is a significant opportunity to strengthen Lower Saxony as a research and business location in the long term,” emphasizes Prof. Dr.-Ing. Marc Christopher Wurz. At the same time, the acquisition of these funds brings the institute closer to its ambitious aim of creating a technological “core facility” in the Hannover/Braunschweig region. This facility is intended to help establish an excellent technological infrastructure in Lower Saxony and thus support basic research and sustainable economic growth at the European level. The focus here is on promoting quantum technology as well as further developing the microelectronics industry.

After the funding of HARD - Hannover Alliance for Research on Diamonds by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in 2022, the funding of MINIMALS is the second ERDF funding acquired at the IMPT.
